Assessment of Micronutrient Status in Children
Micronutrient deficiencies can develop in various patient populations and being able to identify at-risk children and recognize signs and symptoms of deficiencies is vital to avoiding the long-term complications associated with deficiencies. Accurate assessment of micronutrient status is affected by inflammation. Understanding how to interpret findings considering the inflammatory state is key and will be discussed in this presentation.
During this presentation, information related to the assessment for deficiencies of common micronutrients (e.g., iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12, zinc) will provided. Additionally, micronutrients (e.g., vitamin A, copper, selenium) for which deficiencies are less common except in specific patient populations will be included. Evidence-based assessment will be highlighted.
Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will:
- Identify risk factors associated with micronutrient deficiencies in children;
- Explain the risk associated with micronutrient deficiencies;
- Recognize clinical findings related to micronutrient deficiencies in children; and,
- Recommend appropriate laboratory assessment to determine micronutrient status in children.
Dr. Katherine Hammond Chessman received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Presbyterian College, and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Pharmacy in Charleston, SC. She completed a Pediatric Pharmacotherapeutics and Nutrition residency at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and LeBonheur Children's Hospital.
She is currently a tenured Professor and Chair in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences at the MUSC College of Pharmacy.
She has been the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Pediatric Surgery at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital for more than 38 years. She is also a member of the Pediatric Intestinal Rehabilitation Team at MUSC.
Dr. Chessman is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the Pediatric Pharmacy Association. She is board-certified in Nutrition Support. Her research and practice interests included pediatric nutrition support, specifically parenteral nutrition and short bowel syndrome, care of children undergoing surgery, and pediatric pharmacy education.

Pediatric Nutrition Focused Physical Exam
In the pediatric space, the completion of NFPE is lacking due to knowledge deficit and lack of confidence in completing the skills. This session will provide clinicians with practical knowledge to complete a nutrition focused physical exam with the patients they care for, allowing for better and more timely identification of malnutrition and nutrient deficiencies.
In this presentation, Jodi will provide a comprehensive review of Pediatric Nutrition Focused Physical Exam (PNFPE). The clinician will learn how to identify malnutrition and common micronutrient deficiencies seen in pediatrics using NFPE. The course will end with case vignettes of children with clinical conditions that may be associated with micronutrient deficiencies and photos will be incorporated for illustration.
Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the purpose and unique aspects of pediatric nutrition focused physical examination (PNFPE);
- Assess areas of muscle and fat wasting to identify malnutrition;
- Evaluate the presence of edema of fluid accumulation;
- Describe clinical signs of micronutrient deficiencies and toxicities;
- Address common barriers to completing PNFPE.
Jodi Wolff has been a clinical dietitian for over 20 years. She has extensive experience working in critical care, GI, metabolic disorders, oncology and neurological impairment.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from Youngstown State University and a Master of Science degree in Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
She is a fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) and the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. She helped create the curriculum for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Focused Physical Exam (NFPE) Hands -On Workshop.
Jodi has authored articles and book chapters on topics such as critical care, nutrition for neurologically impaired children and gastrointestinal nutrition. She is a frequent lecturer on Malnutrition and Nutrition Focused Physical Exam and believes that NFPE is an essential skill for all dietitians in patient care.

Measure for Measure: It’s Not Just Anthropometrics Anymore
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of health and well-being for all children whether they are typically developing or have neurologic impairment (NI). In fact, for children with NI, optimizing nutrition is the most important tool in our rehabilitation toolkit!
However, the assessment of nutrition status in children with NI is more challenging because the typical childhood measurement techniques and growth charts are not adequate in and of themselves to form opinions about the nutrition status in children with NI. Instead, a multimodal assessment is required to correctly interpret and plan for optimising nutrition in this special population.
This session will address all the elements of a multimodal nutrition assessment and its interpretation for children with NI in order to develop individualized nutrition care plans.
Objectives: At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the nutrition assessment process;
- Understand the anthropometric techniques needed to complete the assessment; and,
- Interpret salient nutrition indicators to assist in optimizing nutrition.
Dr. Gina Rempel is a neurodevelopmental paediatrician who loves feeding little creatures of any species, especially young kangaroos and bats, but little humans are fun to feed too.
For her clinical work, Gina is an inpatient nutrition support and complex care paediatrician at the Children’s Hospital Winnipeg where she shares her passion for optimising nutrition and for enteral and oral nutrition safety in children with medical complexity who have eating and drinking difficulties. She is the medical lead for the paediatric provincial home enteral nutrition support program in Manitoba, Canada.
After a lifetime of watching children eat, Gina’s career goals are to share her knowledge of eating and drinking problems in children with medical complexity through teaching learners at all levels at the University of Manitoba, through speaking engagements and webinars and by participating in publications and guideline-development.
Gina has recently authored several book chapters for the American Society of Parenteral Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) and is actively involved in feeding safety guidelines development. She is also a charter member of the group known as PICNNIC (Promoting International Collaboration for Nutrition In Neurologic Impairment in Children) which has developed a definition for malnutrition in the complex children whose care she is privileged to participate in.
